Lake Erie Facts
Lake Erie was discovered in 1669 by a French explorer Louis Joilet. Lake Erie was one of the last of the Great Lakes to be discovered.
The present day lake are the result of glaciers advancing and retreating over thousands of years. As you travel by water you will be able to see (using the depth finder) long sharp grooves cut in the bedrock from these massive sheets of ice.
The greater part of the southern shoreline Lake Erie was occupied by native Indians called "Eries" The Iroquoin tribe called the lake "Erige" (cat) because of it's unpredictable nature.
Lake Erie is the only lake out of the Great lakes that has three basin's most refer to Lake Erie as the western, central, or eastern basin. Lake Erie is about 241 miles long, about 57 miles wide at it's widest point with 871 miles of shoreline. The maximum depth is 210 feet deep with an average depth in the central basin of 60 feet deep. The outlet for Lake Erie is the Niagara river and consequently  is the water supply to Niagara Falls. Lake Erie's water evaporates constantly and the average surface area of loss is 34" to 36" per year.
What makes Lake Erie different is as water flows to the Niagara river the lake is fed by the Detroit river (represents 80-90 percent of water inlet). Although you are on a lake a true "river" environment exists from these water flows.
Lake Erie and it's shoreline are a major source of many minerals. The largest sandstone quarry in the world is located in Amherst, Ohio. Sand, Gypsum, and limestone used for construction are found in abundance. 1800 feet below Lake Erie you will find one of the largest salt mines. Salt is important for the state as revenue used in treating roads and highways during the winter months.
Lake Erie is amazing and a valuable resource to all of us.
